Chicken Market Report for Non-Experts - Week of 5/1/2023

Chicken Market Report

In the chicken market, players looking for WOGs (Without Giblets) and tenders are finding it difficult to obtain the product at attractive price points. Only a small number of sellers have spot visibility, resulting in limited marketing opportunities. As a result, some participants are turning to the freezer, where limited space and rising costs are restricting the channel through which the product can move. Spot availability for the entire chicken and WOG complex is lean, with most outlets barely getting enough supply. Buying from retail, foodservice and processing segments is active, with paid prices ranging from flat sheet to a moderate premium for small volume bookings. Breasts and forequarters are in solid shape, with higher offers for asked prices and final sales.

For boneless breasts, market conditions are mostly stable, with isolated sales indicating a slightly stronger outlook. The segment is well supported and held by sellers with some confidence. Tenders are being pursued with enthusiasm, but supplies are struggling to keep up with current demand and higher offers are not encouraging additional production. In the wing complex, buyers of small and jumbo offerings can easily find their full requirements, while the undertone surrounding medium offerings is mixed. The supply environment is somewhat tighter for buyers with strict size requirements than for those with some flexibility.

As for the hindquarters of the bird, legs and leg quarters are in high demand from both domestic and export trade channels. Some buyers have begun to take a more cautious and price sensitive approach to meet their immediate needs. Thighs and drumsticks are well positioned at quoted levels and viewed positively by sellers. Demand for thigh meat continues to grow gradually, while demand for leg meat is moderate. Fresh and frozen MSC (mechanically separated chicken) are struggling to gain traction and sellers are showing a willingness to accept lower bids if necessary.

Outlook: The chicken market remains challenging for both buyers and sellers.
