Pork Market Report for Non-Experts - Week Of April-24-2023: Limited Activity in the Market

Cutting Pork Meat

The pork market has experienced limited activity in the last days. According to the reports, "volume was generally limited throughout the negotiated market and activity was on the quieter side following the weekend." The green meat complex saw a steady to slightly firmer trend in hams, along with an improved export demand and interest for deli meat. Bellies, on the other hand, remained mostly sideways, with only seasonal interest for bacon picking up slightly. Despite this, gains witnessed on the wholesale market for bellies were minimal. Trim was mostly steady to softer, and demand for sausage and hot dog items continued to be lackluster.

The fresh pork complex saw modest support in loins, and pulled pork interest was elevated as we enter supportive seasonal period. Butts were sideways, but modest support was noted for upcoming Memorial Day interest in the rib markets.

In recent months, retail bacon prices have declined, but overall sales have not improved. Food service interest for bacon has been slightly better, but overall demand for pork items at retail and food service applications continues to drag. However, with summertime approaching, participants are optimistic about a swing in interests, especially for bacon, ribs, and deli meat as we have seen historically.

Looking ahead, we can expect a similar trend in the pork market, with limited activity and seasonal interest for bacon, ribs, and deli meat. However, we can expect a more positive trend with the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, as we have seen modest support in the rib markets for this event.

Overall, the pork market has been mostly steady, and while there are some signs of optimism for a swing in interests, it is still too early to make any significant predictions. However, with the market being largely in balance with supply and demand, it is a good time for customers to make informed purchasing decisions based on their needs.
